Now that has suddenly changed. For me it began at a book signing. Her blue eyes widened in horror as she glanced down at the stack of books from which a customer had just selected a copy and handed it to me, the author, for a signature. As I handed the satisfied customer his book, from the corner of my eye I noticed the womans expression change from disbelief to curiosity. I smiled, prepared to answer any questions regarding my books, especially Tales of Florida Crackers, the one that apparently caught her attention. Her expression changed once more when she looked over at me, obviously puzzled by what she saw, but then that changed to puzzlement.I said, Youre welcome to browse through the book.

She looked as if I had just invited her to plunge her bare hand into a toilet bowl. She hadnt even picked it up and turned it over to read the back cover. It was my turn to be puzzled, so I refrained from making any more comments about the book. It took a few moments before she murmured, How could you write a book like this?My confusion must have shown by word or expression because she leaned forward and whispered, Its such a dirty word.Whats a dirty word? She pointed to the word Cracker.I managed not to laugh with relief.

I spent many a book signing since 1996 debating the origin of the word, but never in this context. I shook my head and replied, Theres nothing dirty about the word Cracker. Before I could say more, she glared and replied, I was told it is a word you never use. She turned and marched off.Flabbergasted, I turned to the next customer, who must have taken in the exchange. She shrugged, smiled, and handed me some money and a book to signed.I pretty much forgot the encounter until I watched a portion of testimony during the Zimmerman trial.

Apparently, a segment of our population was now using Cracker in retaliation for the N word. There was a time when the vilified N word wasnt considered unspeakable, or meant in a derogatory manner. Over the years, Ive heard some very nice blacks refer to themselves by that term.

Originally, Im sure it was nothing more than a dialect version of Negro. Were my books now to be outlawed over political correctness? I thought we fought a war over book burnings and such. Would the C word now join the F and N words? The F word used to get your mouth washed out with soap, but the consequences for using the N word today can lead to big trouble, so Id rather not go down that road.

Must I now stop talking about my Crackers and hide them away?WELL, IM NOT GOING TO!What a sad commentary on our society that we even consider throwing away history and heritage because of the twisted meaning or use of a word .....continued as the final chapter.WHAT IS A CRACKER?
